Ebook About 'It's absolutely brilliant, it made me laugh - in fact snort - out loud and then cry. Susie is a marvellous writer.' The Good Life France. As the world's worst housekeeper, running holiday homes wasn't, with hindsight, a sensible idea. But two collapsing buildings on Susie Kelly's land would cost more to demolish than to restore. Thus she became a seasonal landlady. But before the guests came the builders. No's 1, 2, 3 all started promisingly, but by builder No. 4, and with her first guests just hours away, Susie's patience was stretched to its limit. Her summer and winter visitors couldn't, as they say, be made up, though, to spare their blushes some of them have been air-brushed. They brought with them laughter, tears, romance, friendship and occasional madness. And they all left behind jars of jam and pots of pepper. From them Susie learned that you don't need to travel to find adventure. If you run holiday homes it comes to your doorstep. Unfortunately for Susie, this included Ivy. The cleaning lady from hell.'There are a handful of authors who will achieve that elusive trick of making you laugh out loud. For me it's James Herriot, Bill Bryson & Susie Kelly.' French Entree Magazine 'Reading a Susie Kelly book is like sitting down for a cuppa and a chat with your best friend... your funny, witty, generous, big-hearted, kind, eloquent, compassionate, intuitive, sometimes poignant, often hilarious best friend.' Author Tanya Bullock'This is another Susie Kelly great read that often had me laughing out loud as we meet the various builders, her local friends, the good guests and the bad who popped into her life over a four year period.' French Village Diaries'I really enjoy reading Susie Kelly's books and this one was no exception. I was really sorry that she no longer rents out the gites - I was ready to book one for a holiday just so I could meet her.' Goodreads'I loved this book so much, I couldn`t put it down. I laughed and cried at all the characters. Excellent. I highly recommend it.' Goodreads'Reading her books is like listening to relaxing music...'The best in French travel writing. If you enjoy books by Bill Bryson and Chris Stewart you will love this tale of the ups and downs of holiday letting.Book Swallows & Robins: The Laughs And Tears Of A Holiday Home Owner Review :
Despite a few folks that test their host's patience, most of them add color to her life. She seems to be able to do with just about anyone - and find the good in them. Yes, there were a few whom she cared not to see ever again, but those experiences didn't stop her from believing in kind people. Only wish we knew what happened to Tristram and Beverly. Looking forward to reading any new books b/c I've read her other ones! A book about a woman's experiences running a pair of vacation homes sounds like it should be a business guide, or at the very least offer some tips on how to make sure your operation runs smoothly. "Swallows and Robins" is no such thing -- it's author Susie Kelly's personal account of her experiences as a hostess, the eccentric cast of characters she met in the process, and the mistakes she made along the way. And it's at turns hilarious, heartbreaking, and all around delightful.Susie Kelly is terrified of housework, so even she is questioning why she wants to turn the two decrepit outbuildings on her property into holiday cottages for rent. After going through no less than four builders in trying to restore the buildings, she finally settles into a routine and begins accepting guests from all over the world... when she's not butting heads with her wildly eccentric housekeeper or entertaining her quiet but just as eccentric American penpal. And over the course of four years she will play host to a group of nudists, guests terrified of the chickens and dogs she keeps on her property, kids and teenagers both obnoxious and well-behaved, a violently insane artist, and a host of other colorful personalities. The writing in this book wasn't spectacular, in my opinion, but it did its job well and was technically sound. Kelly does a good job of telling her story without showing a lot of bias, and is just as likely to make fun of herself or point out her own flaws as she is to skewer the bad/weird behaviors of her guests. And she works hard to find the silver lining in most of her guests' stays, even those that were perfectly obnoxious to put up with. She even reveals interesting tidbits about village life in France, and some aspects of French history and culture that most outsiders would be unfamiliar with.Much of the humor simply comes from the antics of her guests... and let's face it, human behavior is so weird that it doesn't need much embellishment to make it hilarious. And when you're not wanting to strangle certain guests for their horrible behavior (such as the artist who threatens the cats and trashes her cottage before leaving, or the parents who hang out at bars all day and leave the kids behind), you're laughing at their misadventures and quirks, and perhaps even going "hey, I know people like that."A delightful little read, "Swallows and Robins" might not be a masterpiece, but it's a light and enjoyable humor read for when you just want a book to put a smile on your face. And it might make you want to plan your own vacation to a holiday home in rural France...
