Ebook About
Spirit of the Road: The Life of an American Trucker embarks on a one-year journey across the United States in an eighteen-wheeler. It runs the gambit from a wide-eyed rookie in Commercial Driving school to the eventual embracing of a new lifestyle at a dusty little truck stop in Crab Orchard, Tennessee. Having made the transition to trucking after spending 20 years in television broadcasting, the author sets a comical tone from the very first chapter in a “fish-out-of-water” story. However, the dangers and challenges of life in a big truck are very real, and the book takes on a more somber tone to describe this aspect of road life. The reader is also introduced to little-known, funny, or unusual historical facts about some of the places visited while they are along for the ride. The objective of this book is to give the reader an entertaining, yet candid, picture of the life of a long haul trucker with a little slice of Americana on the side. This book always keeps the reader in mind, and strives to both inform and entertain. Another unique feature is the inclusion of a “traveling cat” in the story. The comical and, sometimes, poignant adventures of “Kitty” are interwoven throughout the book and promises to hold appeal for pet lovers. The trucking lifestyle has been depicted in various television series and movies and, as with any job that holds a degree of adventure and danger, it sparks the interest of the general public. The life of the American trucker still holds a bit of the rugged explorer’s lifestyle. The trucker is usually far from home and uncertain what lies around the next bend. Curiosity about the unknown is an attractive feature to the general reader. Spirit of the Road: The Life of an American Trucker is a book that touches into a cornerstone of a lifestyle that few people know about, but that hides a passionate group that bears further study, namely, truck drivers.

Book Spirit of the Road: The Life of an American Trucker...and his cat. Review :

I am a 52 year old female, sick to death of white collar cubicle work after 10 years with Social Security Admin as a disability examiner. I'm a QA/QC person for SSA disability claims. In a nutshell, my job is to sit at a desk and scroll thru medical records all day and ensure that the disability decision that was made (either allowed or denied) is correct. If wrong, we have to write it up and cite violated polices. Our normal case load assignment is 9 cases per day. After jobsearching for nearly a year and a half, I am seriously considering getting my CDL and becoming an over the road trucker despite possibly almost 50% paycut at first. This guy describes the reality of the daily life of a trucker: the problems you can have w your dispatcher, the difficulties he had as an inexperienced driver backing into different loading docks-some without much room; loads not being evenly distributed weight-wise when loaded into his truck; minor mechanical difficulties; life in truck stops or difficulty finding a place to park for the night.. and on and on.. It is realistic. It is intimidating for me to take this step, but I am still considering it.He brings up a lot of points in his book, issues new drivers might come across that are unlikely to be addressed in training because there is so much out there that could happen, questions about which one would not even consider asking. I highlighted all of these in the book. If I decide to make the leap of faith and get my CDL, I plan to make note of these for questions to ask once I become a trainee at a trucking company. Also, the author has creative and witty writing style that is entertaining and even funny. He also did some research on the little towns he passed thru and included interesting trivia facts about some of these little towns. I take a lot of roadtrips, and this book also provides some fun info on little towns worth exploring.UPDATE: I've been a truck driver 6 months now and LOVE it. I think my first year will be about a 1/3 paycut from the SSA job but it's worth it because SSA was such a miserable place to work. I will likely lease my own truck within the next six months. There are a lot of wonderful training companies out there for new drivers. However STAY AWAY FROM SCHNEIDER. I started there but they tried to force me into my truck after only 13 days of training. Right now I drive for Prime and love it.My advice to anyone who seriously considers this, get your commercial driver's license from a local community college or local driving school then go to a company that trains new drivers (NOT SCHNEIDER). Even after you get your CDL, you will still need further training.Learn the business and industry, then lease or buy your own truck. You will likely earn 6 figures, after expenses but before taxes. Trainers can earn $150k.
Interesting book, and the story is well told. I was attracted to this book for two reasons. Firstly, I’m a cat-lover and recently lost my wonderful 13 year-old cat to cancer. He was one of the best friends I’ve ever had, and I miss him terribly. My cat, whom my husband and I also called Kitty, travelled the country with us. We are both RN’s, and have lived all over the U.S. working temporary assignments. We did this for about five years, and Kitty was a trooper who seemed to really enjoy the adventures of the traveling lifestyle. The second reason I wanted to read this book is because I have often thought that, had I been a man, I might’ve liked to be a trucker. I’ve always loved to travel and drive. I know that women do work as truckers, but I don’t think I’d have been tough enough! After reading Rick’s book I know I was right. I would’ve given up the first day I had to go without a shower! I really enjoyed his book and my only criticism would be that it needs better editing. The vocabulary is dressed to impress, but there are numerous grammatical errors. There were so many “Kitty-and-me’s” it would be hard to count them all, plus a number of other zingers. From reading other reviews, I noticed that some mention the death of Rick’s cat, which was not included in my American Kindle version. In a way I’m glad I was spared reading about that, but I wonder what else I might have missed. Overall, the book was a pleasure to read and I’ll watch for other works from this author.
