As someone who has lived, worked, and traveled throughout Southeast Asia for the better part of two decades, the highest praise I can give Mr. Winn's book is that he gets the little details right. And if someone can demonstrate that they've mastered the little details, it lends credence to their larger thesis. I've been the morbidly curious dirtbag foreigner watching lackeys put up Christmas decorations at the Strand under watchful English eyes. I've smelled students smoking Yaba in the bathroom of my Bangkok high school, and I've seen the trucks loaded with live dogs cruising along the Pakse highway bound for Vietnam. It's a truly bonkers part of the world, in good and bad (and sublime, and horrific) ways, and Winn, unlike many observers of the region, is able to fold these surreal contradictions into a unified set of narrative picaresques. One observation: Winn's heart clearly lies with telling the grander story of the Burmese narcotics trade, and I hope that he is working towards delivering something along those lines. It would make an excellent companion to McCoy's Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia. Winn does a great job exposing the morally ambiguous areas of criminality in Asia. If you are interested in Asian culture particularly Se Asia this is a must read. There is a great degree of moral and ethical questions raised when a westerner visits or lives in Asia. As an American i was once inclined to see the world in terms of black and white. After 18 years living in Asia, I know that the multitude of cultures really require more than superficial snap judgments. The journalist does all the work that we might not have the guts to do ourselves.The journey you will take includes Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam. You'll meet drug dealers, users and those who punish them. Thai Bar girls on the border of Malaysia where an insurgency is taking place. North Korean hostesses in Thailand and the truth of their lives. Dog thieves and traders in Vietnam. and those who hunt the thieves.Were I teaching a class on SE Asia this would be required reading.
